The Speach

Oh my gosh, we freaking made it! Who knew this day would actually come?!

I don’t think that any of us will forget the adventure that is nursing school. I remember the first few weeks when we were all intimidated by each other since the average admitting GPA was the highest it’s been in years.

I remember thinking during my biweekly nervous breakdowns in J1 that every one was way better prepared than I was… and on top of everything. We just gave it a few weeks, and when all the boundaries were broken while practicing bed baths on each other in skills lab, I think we all realized that we were all without a clue trying to figure out what a nursing process report really was and what was due the next week. .

Nursing school came to own our lives. It’ll be hard to forget how awkward it was explaining the red stain on your clothing after having a little trouble in the skills lab from IV practice, or how excited you were that you got to start a Foley in clinical that day to your non nursing friends.

It really shows our character that each and every one of us has performed beautifully under inconceivable amounts of stress. In the wee hours of the morning and with toxic levels of caffeine in our bloodstream, we’ve excelled even with our professors watching our every move.

We have earned our success, at the expense of our social lives. But seriously, we deserve it. We’ve put the hours in studying for Carelock’s diabolical tests, we’ve made concept maps that look like your colored pencils threw up on posterboard. And we’ve abused our printers by printing fifty-plus pages each week on those lovely client databases… and case studies… and synthesis papers.

Let’s be proud of our accomplishments and our four/five years as a student at the University of Texas.

But outside of all the work it’s taken to get us here to this point, I think the major part of what makes nursing school so unforgettable is the people that surround you. When we entered this program, I doubt we would realize the impact our classmates would have on our life. Surrounding you are outstanding men and women who you looked up to, who challenged you, and who learned from your example.

As we enter the working world (yay employment!), I am proud to maybe one day have the opportunity and privilege to work with a graduate of the University of Texas School of Nursing.

Congratulations graduating class of 2007! We rock!
